Kuthampully Village

History

img

Kuthampully is a traditional cotton weaver's village located on the banks of the river Bharathapuzha in the Thrissur district of Kerala, India. Since over 500 years Kuthampully is the place of looms of traditional weaving. A traditional cotton weaver’s village with around 600 Brahmin families, Kuthampully is well known for kasavu handloom weaving. Kuthampully saris are a favourite among womenfolk not only in Kerala, but also in other parts of the country. They followed the traditional path in the early days and their different kinds of Indian clothings like kasavu double dhoti, veshti and set mundu became popular. Later on, embroidery techniques have been deftly applied on traditional Kuthampully sarees to produce designer ones. At present around 3000 people are employed in this sector mostly through cooperatives and as small-scale entrepreneurs.

The Kuthampully saree is distinguished from other sarees by its border. The tradition of Kuthampully handloom was started many years ago by a few weavers (Devengas) from Mysore who were asked to weave dresses for the Maharaja of Cochin. These weavers were the Devengas who are typically the South Indian weaver community. The Devengas are a large unit of weavers who are governed by caste rules. It is said that the Maharaja of Cochin appreciated the weaves made by the Devengas community so much that the community and its predecessors decided to settle in the Kuthampully and transformed the entire village to a weaving village. Back then, 500-600 years ago nobody was familiar with the name Kuthampully village. But now a huge transformation has occurred and people all over the world know what Kuthampully sarees are. It is beautiful to see the faith, hard work and determination of the weaving community.

At present there are about 800 families who are still engaged in the weaving process of Kuthampully handloom. They are gentle, warm and quiet and are catering to Malayali's all around the world. Every house has its own handloom machine. They work from dawn to dusk. The Kuthampully sarees is the traditional dress of Kerala for many years now. The sarees are different from the regular sarees because of the golden embroidery. The texture of the saree depends on the type of thread, thickness and style of weaving. The sarees have beautiful temple designs and figures of kathkali and lord Krishna printed on them. It also features the kara or the line design. The typical chutti gives it a Keralite authenticity.
